Johnny Cash: Rare Matters Ballroom poster, 1960
A two-color calendar poster for the Matters Ballroom in Decorah, Iowa, May 7 - June 4, 1960, including a show by The Johnny Cash Show Plus the Tennessee Two on May 16.
22 x 14 in.
Johnny Cash was an artist in transition in the early '60s. His recordings for Sun Records positioned him as a rock and roll artist but, by the time of this performance, he'd moved to Columbia Records and was forging a path in country music. Matters (pronounced Mah-durs) Ballroom was like many of the hundreds of ballrooms that dotted the American Midwest and featured mostly regional talent and the occasional national act. The image on this poster utilizes a printing block with Cash's portrait. To our knowledge, this poster has never been offered at auction before.
