Signed First Day Cover
Jonas Salk (1914-1995). An American Cancer Society official first day cover boldly signed by Jonas Salk in black felt-tip, "Jonas Salk," underlining his bold signature. Measuring 6.5" x 3.625". A black and white tonal cachet by Art Craft depicts the "Crusade against Cancer" and features a 5-cent commemorative postage stamp, postmarked April 1, 1965, Washington, DC. An American virologist and medical researcher, Salk developed one of the first successful polio vaccines. He was immediately hailed as a miracle worker when the vaccine's success was made public in April 1955, and he chose to not patent the vaccine or seek any profit from it in order to maximize its global distribution. By 1959, the Salk vaccine had reached about 90 countries.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
