Title: The first cigarette
Bronze Sculpture
Measure 6 1/2"in H x 3 1/2"in W x 2 1/4"in D

Biography: Josep Cardona was a Catalan sculptor and disciple of the sculptor Manel i Leal, he studied painting, sculpture and engraving at the school of Fine Arts of La Lonja, where he coincided with Pablo Picasso - who portrayed him more than once - and they shared a studio in Escudellers Blancs street in Barcelona. He was a member of the Circulo Artistico de Sant Lluc, at least from 1897, and of the Real Circulo Artistico de Barcelona. He made stays in Paris, the artistic centre of the time, which became an obligatory visit in order to become acquainted with the prevailing modernity. He also worked in Argentina, where he produced monumental statues, and in Madrid. Although he did themes of gypsy women, his greatest contribution was full-length and small portraits of people, executed with an impressionist vibration, possibly influenced by Pavel Trubetskoy, an Italian sculptor of Russian origin and follower of Rodin. He held a monographic exhibition in May-June 1909 at the Fayans Catalin gallery in Barcelona. The sculpture The Wet Nurse, dated around 1915, can be seen at the Fundacion Rafael in Girona.
