José Denis Belgrano (born in Málaga, 8th of April 1844 – d. 12th of February 1917) was a Spanish painter, a remarkable representative of the Malaga school of painting. He was the favourite painter of Malaga’s bourgeoisie in the 19th and early 20th centuries. His traditionalist paintings reached a great mastery. Biography Thanks to the help of Carlos Larios, Marquis of Guadairo, in 1862 he was able to travel to Rome, where he studied for two years and received the decisive influence of Mariano Fortuny’s work, who he nevertheless did not come to know. Later, in Málaga, he enrolled at the School of Fine Arts (1968) , where he was Bernardo Ferrándiz’s student. In 1875 he returned to Rome, where he remained for two years. On his return to Málaga, he was already a consecrated painter. He decorated the Palace of Heredia, he exhibited his paintings with great success (drawings, watercolours, oil paintings) and he taught as a teacher in the school as of 1887. 1. He is buried at the Cemetery of San Miguel, in Málaga. The Museo de Bellas Artes of Málaga preserves some of his works. A street and a public education centre in Malaga are named after him. The frame is a gift from the gallery and will not be subject to any claim.
