At the age of 14, he travelled to Switzerland, and in Geneva he made intense contact with painting, fully devoting himself to it from that moment onwards. On his return to Spain, he entered Bellas Artes and in 1966 he was acquainted with Sitges, where he established his residence later. During that time, he began to sell his paintings on Madrid’s flea-market and in Sitges, in the middle of the street, in order to be able to survive economically. Later, he began his trips throughout Europe, a bohemian period: Paris, London, Amsterdam, etc. . . and in 1969 he held his first exhibition in Toronto (Canada) . A year later, in the Ateneo of Barcelona, he held his first exhibition in Spain. He has held hundreds of individual exhibitions throughout the whole planet. He has used all the techniques, from cubism to hyperrealism, even the calmer realism of nowadays. On the contrary, his hyperrealism is not cold and merely photographic, but it is full of textures and qualities, and it takes from hyperrealism what is interesting to him. He has lived for many years in India, where he met again those values that he thought our Western society had lost “in order to talk about the lives of humble people in the world”. A fascinating life that Fuentetaja has been able to capture in all its spontaneity, dedicated to his tireless pictorial work of magical and vibrant realism. Men and women, children, many children, houses, markets, surprising costumes, secular crafts, liturgies, can be found in this authentic plastic translation of an universe full of ancestral experiences and depicted in such a masterful way, that we can say without taking the risk of easy praise or exaggeration, that JOSE LUIS FUENTETAJA IS A LIVING CLASSIC, and one of our greatest exponents in contemporary painting, someone who without any doubt will be a part of the history of art in Spain as one of Spain’s best ambassadors to the world.
