José María Guerrero Medina

[ translate ]

JOSÉ MARÍA GUERRERO MEDINA (La Guardia, Jaén, 1942).
Untitled.
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 92 x 73 cm.

Painter, draftsman, sculptor and engraver of self-taught formation, José María Guerrero Medina belongs to the generation of artists after the first Spanish avant-garde of the postwar period, breaking with the abstract informalism of Francis Bacon and Pop Art. Under an expressionist vision, landscapes and figures are protagonists of a search of the ideal, as well as of the reflection on the immediate environment of the artist. The light and the fluctuating colors are conductors of sensations that emerge from the relationship between man and nature. In Guerrero Medina's work, each stain, each brushstroke, each burin stroke, is the result of a previous process of meditation, and configures a microcosm of psychic topographies. In 1963 he participated in a group exhibition at the Sala Parés and won the Rodón Giró Foundation Prize for young painters. That same year he made his individual debut at the Círculo Artístico de Sant Lluc, in Barcelona, and two years later he made the international leap with a personal exhibition at the Die Brücke gallery in Düsseldorf (Germany). Since then he has held personal exhibitions in Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Scandinavia, France and the United States. Among the most recent are those held at the Chapelle du Tiers Ordre in Perpignan (2010), the Art Engert gallery in Eschweiler (Germany, 2010), the Fundació Vila Casas in Barcelona (2010) and the Université Populaire in Bonn (Germany, 2011).
