Jose Weiss O/C Barbizon style Landscape, Village of Bur

Joseph Vincent Nicholas Francis Weiss (English/French, 1859-1919), known as Jose Weiss, oil on canvas landscape painting depicting boats moored along the bank of the River Arun adjacent to the village of Bury in West Sussex. The steeple of the church of St. John the Evangelist and a tall tree rise above the village skyline into a pink-hued sky spotted with small, darkening clouds. Signed "Jose Weiss" lower right. Housed in a mirrored wooden frame with applied rosettes and a reed fillet. Sight: 23 1/2" H x 39 5/8" W. Framed: 31" H x 47 1/8" W. Biography (adapted from Odon Wagner Gallery): Joseph Vincent Nicholas Francis Weiss, also remembered as a pioneer of aviation, was born in Paris, France. He later emigrated to England. He lived in Houghton for the rest of his life, becoming a prolific painter of English landscapes, particularly the Sussex countryside, in the Barbizon school style. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and garnered support from patrons in England and, especially, in the United States. His works are in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Falmouth Art Gallery, the Southampton Art Gallery, and the Kirklees Museum.

The Estate of Edith (Edie) M. Bass, Nashville, Tennessee. Most of the items from her estate in this auction were by descent from her parents, Walter Paul McBride and Claire Childs of Lake Forest, Illinois.
Condition Report: Overall good condition with surface grime and four small tack holes to each corner. Frame with scattered errant paint and some surface wear.
