Joseph Wopfner (Austria, 1843-1927) oil on board painting titled "Boote auf dem Bodensee" or "Boats on Lake Constance" depicting a panoramic scene with two boats filled with figures floating on a lake with mountain landscape in the background under a cloudy blue sky. Signed "J.Wp. lower right. Estate stamp en verso reading "Nachlass Prof. Jos. Wopfner" along with additional German inscription. Housed in a giltwood Louis XIV style frame. Sight: 4 3/4" H x 14 1/2" W. Framed: 10" H x 20" W. Note: This work is featured in Josef Wopfner's Catalogue Raisonne by Irmgard Holz and Alexander Rauch, Figure 540, page 234. Biographical Note: Josef Wopfner is celebrated for his paintings of the Bavarian regions of the Oberland and the Chiemsee, both popular destinations for Munich-based painters like Wopfner. In their moods, Wopfner's landscapes are often meditative and Wopfner himself wanted to be known as a "Holy Painter." His work borders on impressionism in his loose application of paint and gestural brushwork, and many of his paintings are based on drawings made en plein air. Condition Report: Overall very good condition with no visible retouching. Frame with slight loss to right corner.
