1921 - 1986

"Lying deer"

Pencil drawing

Around 1974

16x22cm

Framed in a passe-partout under glass

Condition: perfect

The deer is one of the central themes in Beuys' work. He created numerous drawings, installations and prints, such as the cycle "Circulation Time", in which the deer played an important role. The earliest documented depiction of a deer dates back to 1948; Beuys pursued the theme until the end of his career. For him, the deer has a male gender identity and, as it became increasingly clear in the 1950s, symbolizes death. "This has to do with a certain period of my life when I wanted to die," Beuys explained when asked in an interview.

Provenance: Berlin art trade. Previously Collection H. Flemming, Berlin.
The original invoice is available and a copy will be provided to the buyer.

In 1946, Beuys began studying art at the Düsseldorf Academy. From 1951 he was a master student of Ewald Mataré.

1953 first solo exhibition in the Von der Heydt Museum Wuppertal.

In 1961 Beuys received a professorship at the Düsseldorf Academy. After a protest against the academy's admission regulations, Beuys was released in January 1972.

Beuys took part in Documenta several times and represented Germany at the Venice Biennale in 1976.

The work offered here comes from the estate of a German collector in Maspalomas, Gran Canaria, who lived in New York until 2014.
