Joseph Binder 1898–1972 Stadtbad Mödling vintage poster
Caption Brief: The first impression one gets upon catching sight of this sunshiny bather is that she’s here to promote the swimsuit at the center of this two-sheet design. However, that would be an inaccurate assessment as a quick read of the text reveals that this Art Deco emissary is intended to call our attention to the Mödling public swimming pool situated a scant twenty-five minutes outside of Vienna in the aromatic air at the base of Anninger Mountain, the highest point in the region by the way. And as if the locale wasn’t enough reason to splash around at Mödling, changing rooms are available and use of the pool is unrestricted. Binder was born in Vienna and trained there and in Munich. After a term as professor at the Municipal Institute in Frankfurt, he returned to Vienna to teach at the Academy. On the eve of World War II, he joined the exodus of German and Austrian artists and intellectuals displaced by the rise of Nazism, settling in America, where he became a leading designer of posters for the war effort.
