Joseph Inguimberty was born in Marseille, France. After discovering his passion for drawing at an early age, he enrolled in art school in 1910 and later studied architecture. In 1926, he became a teacher at the École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine (EBAI) in Hanoi, where he diverged from traditional teaching methods and instead emphasised Vietnam's culture. Inguimberty's legacy therefore goes beyond aesthetics, as he bridged tradition and innovation and thus shaped the development of modern Vietnamese art.

Inguimberty's paintings were deeply influenced by the captivating landscapes of southern France. After returning to France in 1946, he settled in Menton, his wife's hometown, while maintaining a pied-à-terre in Marseille. During this period, Inguimberty drew inspiration from the alluring vistas of southern France, resulting in his remarkable landscape paintings.

His works, such as Landscape in the South of France (see Bonhams Hong Kong, 3 December 2022, Lot 37) and Vue des Vallées (see Bonhams Hong Kong, 4 October 2023, Lot 27) exemplify his mastery of plein-air painting. Through dynamic brushwork, Inguimberty captured a sense of tranquillity and illuminated the canvas with bright palettes and radiant outdoor light.
