[ translate ]

Gorgeous Portrait of his wife with daughter by famous painter Joseph Raphael, a prominent member of the California impressionist school. Signed and dated 1909. Oil on board mounted on wood panel 40 x 30 cm. Framed with luxury hand made Gehring Frame! Raphael often painted his wife and children, I have included several examples of similar works as a reference. The painting was taxated 12000 euro by Bonhams Amsterdam. They wanted to auction the painting in the USA which was too expensive and If it remained unsold I had to pay that. Thats the reason why I am selling on Catawiki. Born in California 1869, Raphael studied with Arthur F. Mathews at the California School of Design. In 1902 he entered the École nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, but moved to the Académie Julian and studied under Jean-Paul Laurens. He spent the next several years in the Netherlands. By 1912 he was living in Belgium, He produced many paintings of the countryside near his home. As Raphael's international reputation grew, his family grew as well, to include four daughters and a son. His family frequently appeared in his figurative works. with World War II he returned to San Francisco, where he lived and maintained a studio on Sutter Street until his death in 1950.
