The rectangular scale above calibrated 27" to 31" with a sliding vernier controlled through a glass panelled door, the thermometer calibrated from 20 to110 degrees Fahrenheit, signed in the upper right corner by the maker J. Somalivico & Co., nr. 2 Hatton Garden, Londen. The mahogany case with hidden mercury tube, a round reservoir lid at the base.Note: The Somalvico family worked from the early 18th century to the end of the 19th century. They were usually based in Holborn, London. We believe this instrument was made by Joseph Somalvico, who had two sons, James and Charles. Both followed their father into the world of instrument making and worked with him until the 19th century.
