Literature: Lifelong friends, Josh Sperling and Sam Friedman, collaborated to produce the massive work, ‘J&S#1.’ Composed of 32 parts, this project is a marriage of each artist’s best known working styles. This is exemplified in part 10/32, which incorporates Sperling’s playful “squiggle” sculptural style painting and the luminescent hues of Friedman. Each undulating shape is rendered in shades ranging from pale yellow to fiery amber and bordered by a nautical turquoise. Seen installed all together the work is reminiscent of the crests and calms of the sea’s ever-changing surface. Alone, this writhing canvas recalls a fairly pacific, yet not entirely tame, ocean wave.
