Joyce Treiman (American, 1922–1991) was an American painter and printmaker known for an independent form of figurative expressionism that combined close observation of the human figure with the immediacy of post-war drawing. Born in Evanston, Illinois, she earned her B.F.A. from the University of Iowa in 1943, where she studied painting with Philip Guston. After establishing her career through exhibitions in Chicago and New York, Treiman moved to Pacific Palisades, California, in 1960 and became a distinctive presence within the Southern California art community. Although abstraction dominated much of the period, she remained committed to figurative art and developed crowded, theatrical compositions populated by lovers, artists and historical personalities, often including an image of herself. Her drawing could move freely between sharply observed anatomy and exaggerated caricature, giving her work a mixture of humor and psychological tension. At the Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Treiman used lithography to carry the force of her drawing directly into print, building figures from urgent black marks that remain visibly worked and unsettled. She later taught at UCLA and was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1990. Her work is represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum, as well as the National Gallery of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Untitled, Plate XI from The Mirrored Couple, 1961, is a lithograph printed in black on white wove paper. Published by the Tamarind Lithography Workshop, the work belongs to Treiman’s portfolio of fifteen lithographs, issued in an edition of 20 with nine additional Tamarind impressions. The composition brings together several loosely drawn figures within a crowded interior, their bodies emerging from broad washes and quick, restless lines. Inscribed in graphite “Tamarind Imp.” lower left, denoting an impression retained by the workshop, and signed “Treiman” lower right, with two blindstamps along the lower margin. Sheet measures approximately 20 x 15.25 inches. Overall good appearance. Light toning with minor handling, scattered small spots and slight wear along the naturally deckled edges. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
