Juan Lara (El Puerto de Santa María, 1920-1995) was an Andalusian painter. Costumbrista painter of numerous corners of his hometown set in a 19th century Goyesco: Embarque de Boots, Toro del Aguardiente, Hermitage of Santa Clara, Bullfighting Lesson, etc.
Trained in his father's decoration workshops, he continued his artistic studies at the Academy of Fine Arts of Santa Cecilia, in El Puerto de Santa María, practicing watercolor, life drawing and photography. From his studio in the San Cristóbal mountain range (Cádiz) , he creates his best-known works on different themes; fair posters, portraits, landscapes, Goya's bullfights, teaching the art of bullfighting, the Guadalete River, docks, shipyards, the castle of San Marcos, the world of wine, everyday scenes of Andalusian folklore, etc.
He arrived in Mexico in 1971, a transcendental event in his life and work, with songs such as The Way to Independence, The Pink Cities of Mexico and La Charrería. There, his exhibitions in cities such as León Guanajuato, Mexico City, Taxco, Tenochtitlan, Texcoco, etc. they are very successful.
In 1981 he discovered the exoticism and humanity of the people and streets of Morocco, a stage in which he developed his Arab themes. He was appointed ordinary academic of the Academy of Fine Arts of Santa Cecilia in 1984. His last exhibition was held in San Diego, California in 1993.
