Juillard
Juillard ANDRÉ JUILLARD BLAKE AND MORTIMER The Sanctuary of Gondwana (Vol. 18), Blake and Mortimer 2008 Original plate no. 17 accompanied by its blue-toned color version created in gouache by Madeleine De Mille. Signed. India ink and white gouache on paper 38 × 50 cm (14.96 × 19.69 in.) Color version: 29 × 36.5 cm “There is something truer than the true,” said Baudrillard: “the plausible.” Look at how André Juillard handles the rain here: as the perspective shifts, the diagonal lines vary. But upon closer inspection, everything is consistent; the direction of the lines is carefully observed and remains constant. At the same time, this character in Burberry and a Stetson is surprisingly well-dressed for the mission he has set for himself: climbing all the way up to Captain Blake’s room. This interplay between the real and the plausible is one of the best-kept secrets of the Clear Line. Madeleine De Mille’s magnificent colors contribute to this spell.
