Jules Cavailles, French 1901-1977 - Le Tapis Jeune; oil on canvas, signed lower right 'Cavailles' and signed and titled on the reverse, 91.6 x 73 cm (unframed) (ARR) Provenance: Galerie d'Art de Bourg de Four, Geneva; private collection, purchased from the above in February 1981 Note: this work is registered in the Jules Cavailles Research Center This is a classic example of Jules Cavailles's work, depicting a scene overflowing with joy and colour. Inspired by the great masters of French painting, such as Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard, there is a delicate harmony to this still life composition. The artist moved to Paris in the 1920s, developing an understanding of 20th century French painting and sharing a studio with his friend, Roger Limouse. The artist exhibited at the Paris Salons and later at Arthur Tooth & Sons, London, Findlay Galleries, New York and Galerie Charpentier, Paris. Works are held in public collections including Musee d'Art Moderne, Paris, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and Manchester Art Gallery, amongst many others worldwide.
