Jules Cheret (1836–1932), Montagnes Russes poster, 1888, Lithograph in colours on cream wove, Stamp of Republique Francaise, 120cm x 86.5cm (framed). Footnote: “Montagnes Russes,” or “Russian Mountains,” were an especially early example of the contemporary roller coaster. First developed near St. Petersburg, they were constructed out of giant hills of ice, down which people could push toboggans. In 1812, the French developed a more recognizable form of the roller coaster, involving a fixed track and wheeled car, but kept the old name, as can be seen advertised here.
