Very beautiful work devoted to the life of insects and birds by the historian Jules Michelet.

Two editions admirably illustrated with 140+210 wood engravings, several of which are inset by Hector Giacomelli (1822-1904) , watercolorist and illustrator, known above all for his paintings of birds and the living world.

Perfectly established choice copy, entirely untrimmed.

Well-made binding made in period navy blue half-morocco, spine decorated with personalized and gilded irons (couple of birds in flowered compartments) . Golden head. - In very good condition, rare rubbing on the backs. Fresh, freckle-free interiors. Very nice copy.

Jules Michelet, born August 21, 1798 in Paris and died February 9, 1874 in Hyères, is a French historian.
Author of numerous works, some of which, among the best, dealt with natural sciences, a new subject for him, to which it is said that his wife had introduced him. The first of them L'Oiseau (1856) , he discovered a new and very successful vein. This subject of natural history was not treated from the point of view of science tout court, nor from that of sentiment, nor from anecdote or gossip, but from that of the fervent democratic pantheism of the author, and the The result, although uneven, as was to be expected, was often excellent. L'Insecte followed in 1858, in the same style.
