AQS by Julia Ward Howe, penned in ink on an off-white 5 x 5 embossed card, signed “Julia Ward Howe, December, 1904.” The handwritten passage represents the fifth and concluding stanza of the published version of her celebrated Civil War anthem, 'The Battle Hymn of the Republic.' It reads, in full: “In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born, across the sea, With a glory in his bosom that transfigures you and me. As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free, While God is marching on.” In fine condition, with slight edgewear, including a missing upper right corner tip.
