Known for: Marine, portrait and nude figure painting, illustration, drawing, murals
Biography: Born in Hamburg, Germany in 1909. Ritter immigrated to the U.S. in 1924. While in Chicago, he opted for an art career and studied at the AIC. After moving to Los Angeles in 1930, he further studied at the Art Center School under Stanley Reckless. He then worked for various film studios painting portraits and backgrounds for movie sets. He did murals for the Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939 and painted portraits of prominent Californians. Following service in WWII, he returned to Los Angeles. From 1966 to 1985 he lived in Santa Barbara; his remaining years were spent in Hawaii. He died there on Feb. 27, 2000.
