Biography: Julio Girona was born Havana, Cuba; formative artistic training included studies in Havana and Europe prior to settling in New York in the late 1940s. Girona was a strong influence on a group of young politically vocal Cuban artists, called Los Once. Girona's early works were steeped in the Latin traditions of symbolism with ritual-based subject matter. As a student in New York, while attending the Art Students League, Girona rejected his earlier artistic traditions for surrealist inspired works and the soon to be predominant movement of pure abstraction associated with the New York School of Abstract Expressionists. Girona was chosen in 1952 to participate as Cuba's first entry in the Venice Biennial. In 1954 he showed with other New York School artists. In 1953 through 1956 Girona exhibited regularly at the Arts Club of Chicago. and from 1956 thru 1963 Girona had numerous solo and group exhibitions with Bertha Schaefer in New York. In 1958 he showed at Galerie Gunar in Dusseldorf.
