Julius Prömmel (b. Hamburg 1812, d. Trieste 1870)
Julius Prömmel (b. Hamburg 1812, d. Trieste 1870)
“Engelske Orlogsskibe under Seil ved den italienske Kyst.” English warships under sail off the Italian coast. Signed and dated Prömmel 1837. Oil on canvas. 60×76 cm.
Exhibited: Charlottenborg 1837 no. 176.
Like Anton Melbye, Julius Prömmel was a pupil of Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg (1783–1853). He is first mentioned in Eckersberg’s diary on 3 September 1832 (in Danish): “The young painter Prömmel began drawing today.” He is referred to regularly in the diary throughout the 1830s. Prömmel was also trained as a shipbuilder and, under Eckersberg’s guidance, developed into a skilled marine painter. As a shipbuilder, he was—like his mentor—intimately familiar with the technical details of ships, a knowledge clearly reflected in the precise rendering of the two naval vessels in the present painting.
