Jun Ware Purple Splashed Tripod Dish
Song Dynasty (960-1127)
Finely potted with a mushroom glazed upturned rim, and bluish green celadon glaze dish with purple splash in the center, raised on three slightly outscrolled legs.
H. 2 in., W. 6 7/8 in.
Note: The splashes on Jun wares were made with the application of copper in broad brush strokes or washes over dry bluish glazes, which then merged when fired at full heat. The success of the overall effect depends on the motion of the brush on the distribution across the surface and on the relative 'weight' of one color in relation to the other.
Provenance: Christie's New York, with sticker affixed to base;
Estate of H.H. Pao (1937-2009) Art scholar and dealer with shop in the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto, Canada 1980-1990
