June Wayne (American, 1918-2011), Blue Tidal Wave, 1972 Color Lithograph
June Wayne (American, 1918–2011) was a highly influential American printmaker, painter, designer, author, and educator best known for founding the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles in 1960, an institution widely credited with revitalizing fine art lithography in the United States during the postwar era. A pioneering figure in modern American printmaking, Wayne collaborated with generations of artists and master printers while helping elevate lithography to a major contemporary fine art medium. Her works are held in prominent institutional collections including the Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, National Museum of Women in the Arts, and the Norton Simon Museum.
Blue Tidal Wave, 1972, is a color lithograph printed in shades of blue, red, magenta, gray and pale blue on cream wove paper. The composition places a large red-to-violet circular sun above a cresting blue wave that spreads across the center of the sheet, set against broad curved fields and a lightly patterned background. Numbered “5/15” and titled “Blue Tidal Wave” in graphite lower left, signed “June Wayne” lower right, with a Tamarind blindstamp nearby. Sheet measures approximately 29.5 x 22 inches. Overall good appearance. The sheet shows light toning with minor handling and a few faint spots visible primarily verso. Remnants of mounting tape appear at several points along the upper edge verso. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
