June Wayne (American, 1918–2011) was a highly influential American printmaker, painter, designer, author, and educator best known for founding the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles in 1960, an institution widely credited with revitalizing fine art lithography in the United States during the postwar era. A pioneering figure in modern American printmaking, Wayne collaborated with generations of artists and master printers while helping elevate lithography to a major contemporary fine art medium. Her works are held in prominent institutional collections including the Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, National Museum of Women in the Arts, and the Norton Simon Museum.

Solar Refraction I (Solar Flares V), 1982, color lithograph printed by Edward Hamilton on Wayne’s own Rives paper with Tamstone watermark. Broad diagonal bands of violet, blue, green, yellow, orange, red, and magenta pass across the sheet, interrupted by an irregular pale central band and jagged, flame-like areas of color suggesting the turbulent surface and refracted light of a solar flare. Printed in an edition of 15; Solar Refraction was the fifth and final image of Wayne’s Solar Flares series. Inscribed in graphite at lower left “2/15 Solar Refraction” and signed “June Wayne” at lower right, with the artist’s and printer’s embossed chops. The verso bears the stamped inscription “© 1982 All Rights Reserved JUNE WAYNE” and the graphite notation “JW 319-82.” Sheet measures approximately 17.25 x 17 inches. The sheet shows minor handling and two pieces of old mounting tape at the upper verso corners. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
