June Wayne (American, 1918–2011) was a highly influential American printmaker, painter, designer, author, and educator best known for founding the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles in 1960, an institution widely credited with revitalizing fine art lithography in the United States during the postwar era. A pioneering figure in modern American printmaking, Wayne collaborated with generations of artists and master printers while helping elevate lithography to a major contemporary fine art medium. Her works are held in prominent institutional collections including the Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, National Museum of Women in the Arts, and the Norton Simon Museum.

Solar Wave (Solar Flares IV), 1981, color lithograph on Wayne’s own Rives paper with Tamstone watermark. A brilliant yellow field surrounds overlapping rectangular passages of pale lavender, pink, and blue-gray, while irregular white forms sweep diagonally across the composition like the incandescent edge of a solar eruption. Printed by Edward Hamilton in an edition of 15; the Solar Flares portfolio was later published by Tamarind Institute in 1983. Inscribed in graphite at lower left “2/15 Solar Wave” and signed “June Wayne” at lower right, with Wayne’s and Hamilton’s embossed chops. The verso bears the stamped inscription “© 1982 All Rights Reserved JUNE WAYNE” and the graphite notation “JW 317-82.” Sheet measures approximately 17.25 x 17 inches. The sheet shows light handling and minor toning, with two pieces of old tape at the upper verso corners. Image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
