June Wayne (American, 1918-2011), Three Observers, 1964 Color Lithograph

[ translate ]

June Wayne (American, 1918–2011) was a highly influential American printmaker, painter, designer, author, and educator best known for founding the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles in 1960, an institution widely credited with revitalizing fine art lithography in the United States during the postwar era. A pioneering figure in modern American printmaking, Wayne collaborated with generations of artists and master printers while helping elevate lithography to a major contemporary fine art medium. Her works are held in prominent institutional collections including the Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, National Museum of Women in the Arts, and the Norton Simon Museum.

Three Observers, 1964, color lithograph from zinc in dark beige, light blue, and two brown inks on white Arches paper. Three enlarged, cocoon-like figures hover at different heights within a pale blue and brown atmospheric field, while a densely drawn procession of small seated and standing figures extends across the lower portion of the composition. Printed by Aris Koutroulis and published by the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in an edition of 20, with nine additional Tamarind impressions. Inscribed in graphite at lower left “Tam Imp / Three Observers / Wayne ’64,” with the Tamarind and Koutroulis blindstamps nearby; the verso is inscribed “935.” “Tam Imp” identifies an impression retained by the workshop outside the numbered edition. Sheet measures approximately 29.75 x 22 inches. The sheet shows light toning and handling with a short tear and associated paper loss at the lower-left edge extending slightly into the image. Image otherwise presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
