June Wayne (American, 1918-2011), Vio, 1985 Color Lithograph
June Wayne (American, 1918–2011) was a highly influential American printmaker, painter, designer, author, and educator best known for founding the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles in 1960, an institution widely credited with revitalizing fine art lithography in the United States during the postwar era. A pioneering figure in modern American printmaking, Wayne collaborated with generations of artists and master printers while helping elevate lithography to a major contemporary fine art medium. Her works are held in prominent institutional collections including the Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, National Museum of Women in the Arts, and the Norton Simon Museum.
Vio, 1985, color lithograph on white wove paper, published by Tamarind Institute. A dark, heavily textured rectangular field outlined in vivid blue is placed over a larger ground of softly graduated gray, pale mauve, and green-gray bands. A curved area of blue enters the central field from the lower left, while scattered white marks and a small isolated blue-and-white shape interrupt the nearly black surface. Inscribed in graphite “Vio 4/20 June Wayne” at lower left, identifying this as the first impression from the edition of twenty. Bearing a winged-heart printer’s blindstamp at lower left and Wayne’s mushroom blindstamp at lower right; verso stamped in red “© ’85 All Rights Reserved—June Wayne.” Sheet measures approximately 20.5 × 14.75 inches; image measures approximately 17.75 × 12.75 inches. The sheet appears clean overall with a few tiny scattered specks in the lower margin and minor handling wear; image presents well. Provenance of Martin and Enid Gleich.
