German artist Jurij Frey has developed a realistic painting style, whose blocks of colour and contrasts of light nevertheless reveal an inner complexity. Inspired by a universal subject, man and his condition, the painter and trained illustrator proceeds with touches, which he applies with lively, irregular gestures and always permits turbidity, an inertness in the contours of the forms, which symbolises the doubt present in each of us. For it is indeed modern man who lives and works in the city and populates the paintings of Jurij Frey. The artist explores the contrast between speed, acceleration of city life and the personal, intimate search for serenity, peace and the longing for nature, light, roaming and large spaces, as he points to the contradictions of today’s world.
