THE MERCEDES-BENZ SLS AMG
After production of the SLR McLaren wrapped up, Mercedes-Benz set to work on a new two-seat super-GT to take over the throne. The SLS, as it would become known, was entrusted to AMG and was the first Mercedes-Benz developed and built entirely by the company's high-performance 'Skunkworks' wing. The SLS was conceived as a spiritual successor to the legendary 300SL Gullwing, and even featured its forbearer's signature top-hinged doors. The 50s inspiration stopped there, however, as the SLS's all-aluminum body, styled by Mark Fetherston, housed a front-mid-mounted 6.2-liter V8 thumping out 563bhp, paired with an adaptive 7-speed transmission, and finely-honed aluminum wishbone suspension. Development assistance came via Formula 1 legend David Coulthard, and it proved to be both lighter and faster than the more expensive SLR that preceded it. As a testament to its status as a worthy 300SL successor, the SLS is welcomed by the Gullwing Group, and open to join in their renowned tours and club gatherings.
