Justice Littlejohn Painting "A Bunch of Women" ca. 2004

[ translate ]

Justice Littlejohn (American, Contemporary). "A Bunch of Women" - mixed media painting on wood board, ca. 2000. A mesmerizing work of figural abstraction by Justice Littlejohn of South Carolina. Littlejohn's composition presents a trio of stylized female figures in a style that rejects absolute non-representational abstraction and still honors the figure. It is as if Picasso's Cubist approach meets De Kooning's figural abstraction in Littlejohn's work. Visages are presented from several angles simultaneously; bodies are boldly rendered with exaggerated forms and dramatic gestural marks; there is a guitar at the upper left that pays homage to Picasso's assemblages; and all is delineated in a colorful palette against a black ground, making for a dramatic and unforgettable presentation. Size: 48" L x 37" W (121.9 cm x 94 cm)

Provenance: private Superior, Colorado, USA collection, purchased in Mexico in 2021

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

#168912
Condition Report: Signed by the artist on the lower left. There are a few minor scuffs/abrasions/chips, most to peripheries that do not impact the imagery, a few to the body of the painting but not very prominent. The title "A Bunch of Women" is hand painted on the verso. In addition, a few numbers that appear to be somewhat obscured by spray paint appear on the verso. These include "04" - perhaps indicating the year the painting was created.
