Edo period (1615-1868), probably 19th century
The rich nashiji ground decorated in gold, silver and slight coloured takamaki-e and gold, hiramaki-e with a continuous scene depicting a sparrow splashing in a chozubachi (water bowl or vessel used to rinse the hands in Japanese temples, shrines and gardens), a hishaku (water ladle) resting on its edge, a second sparrow flying around a young stem of bamboo on the reverse, details highlighted in shell, the interior of nashiji; signed on the base in gold hiramaki-e Kanshosai saku. 7.5cm x 6cm (2 15/16in x 2 3/8in).
