KENNEDY, JACQUELINE as FIRST LADY Autograph letter to Oleg Cassini.
Washington: 17 February 1961. Six manuscript pages in blue ink signed "Jackie", written on the recto and verso of two bifolium sheets of gold embossed "The White House/Washington" stationery. Accompanied by the original postmarked envelope addressed in Mrs. Kennedy's hand. Each page 6 3/4 x 4 1/4 inches. The letter fine and with usual folds, loosely held in a larger display (likely for museum exhibition).
In this fine early letter as First Lady, Mrs. Kennedy congratulates Oleg Cassini on his recent successes: "Dear Oleg - It seems your collection was a smash ... Diana Vreeland called to say how good she heard it was ... Congratulations I am so proud of you." Mrs. Kennedy also mentions that "It's true [Marc] Bohan did everything you said I should do before the Inauguration," this a reference to the Dior designer whose looks influenced Cassini's (and vice versa). The First Lady also raves: "Jack ADORES his ties-they are so perfect-I thought I would never be able to get him pretty ties again-now that I can't go to my old haunts-but these are better than any I ever saw."
The letter closes describing the lack of space for horses at the Kennedy's newly rented country estate Glen Ora, near Middleburg, Virginia ("I can't even shelter a pony for Caroline") and inviting Cassini to visit the home in the fall for a hunt. See Oleg Cassini. A Thousand Days of Magic, 1995, p. 221.
