KLEIN YVES: (1928-1962)
KLEIN YVES: (1928-1962) French artist, a leading member of the French artistic movement of Nouveau réalisme. A printed slim oblong 8vo invitation card issued by Pierre Restany and Iris Clert, with blue embossed text to the recto stating ´Iris Clert vous convie à honorer, de toute votre présence affective, l´avènement lucide et positif d´un certain règne du sensible. Cette manifestation de synthèse perceptive sanctionne chez Yves Klein la quête picturale d´une émotion extatique et immédiatement communicable´ (Translation: ´Iris Clert invites you to honour, with your whole emotional being, the lucid and positive advent of a certain reign of the senses. This manifestation of perceptual synthesis marks the culmination, in Yves Klein’s work, of the pictorial quest for an ecstatic and immediately communicable emotion´) and further confirming that the opening of the event will be held at 3 Rue des Beaux-Arts, on Monday, 28th April (1958; Klein´s 30th birthday), from 9.00 pm to midnight. Signed (´Invitation special, Yves Klein´) by the artist in blue fountain pen ink to the verso. Autographs of Klein are extremely rare in any form as a result of his untimely death at the age of 34. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG
Pierre Restany (1930-2003) French art critic and theorist who was closely associated with Klein and became the principal intellectual spokesman for Nouveau Réalisme. In 1960 he formulated the movement's theoretical basis and drafted its founding declaration, signed by Klein, Arman, François Dufrêne, Raymond Hains, Martial Raysse, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely and Jacques Villeglé.
Iris Clert (1917-1986) Greek-born French art dealer and gallerist who became an influential champion of the Parisian avant-garde. She opened her tiny Galerie Iris Clert at 3 rue des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1956 and subsequently exhibited many artists associated with Nouveau Réalisme, notably Klein and Arman. Clert's flair for provocative and unconventional exhibitions made her gallery an important centre of experimental art in post-war Paris.
The present invitation relates to one of the defining events of Yves Klein's career, his legendary exhibition Le Vide (´The Void´), which opened at the Galerie Iris Clert on 28th April 1958. For the exhibition Klein emptied the gallery of artworks and objects, painted the interior white and presented the apparently vacant space itself as an immaterial ´pictorial sensibility´. The invitation was conceived as an integral part of the event: its text was composed by Pierre Restany and printed in blue relief on white card, and some 3,500 examples were distributed. The resulting exhibition, which attracted considerable crowds, became a landmark in Klein's pursuit of the immaterial and in the post-war development of conceptual and performance-based art.
