Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century
Worked throughout in the typical Komai-style of silver and gold overlay, with silver-outlined swirling panels enclosing a dense design of seasonal kacho-ga (bird-and-flower) scenes including swallows perched on branches of trailing wisteria, kingfishers in a lotus pond, repeat geometric motifs of lozenges, formal diaper, and fragmented rinzu (textile-weave) as well as famous landmarks and temple precincts such as Yasaka Shrine, Arashiyama, Shunkoin Temple, Kiyomizu Temple, and Seta Bridge, the body encircled with a narrow band of hanabishi shippo-zunagi (flowery-diamond linked-jewels), the rim with a narrow band of shippo-tsunagi (linked-cash), the foot with a narrow band of wave pattern; signed on the base Nihon koku Saikyo no ju Komai sei within a square seal. 20.5cm (8 1/16in) high.
