KÖNIG (THE) VON SION. Hamburg, Verlagsanstalt und Druckerei-Actiengesellschaft, 1879. - HAMERLING, Robert.
Large folio of 355 pages. Luxury binding, executed by the renowned Roman firm GLINGLER, in dark blue chagrin with 4 fillets in a panel at the edges. Six compartments on the spine, one of them stamped with the arms of Queen Margherita of Italy, to whom this copy once belonged. It also has on the flyleaf a large ex-libris of Queen Elena of Italy. Wide gilt edges in fine gold. Gilt binder’s stamp on the back cover. All edges gilt. Spine with some defects due to loss of leather but a royal copy!!!
The author, an Austrian poet, wrote this work "Der König von Sion" (1869) "The King of Zion", which is generally considered his masterpiece. The book is written in unrhymed hexameters and depicts the Anabaptist (early Protestant) movement of Münster in 1534. The landscapes of "The King of Zion" are often described as "foreboding" and "enchanting", and the work is said to embody "the sweet madness of the Romantics". The work focuses on the figure of João de Leiden (Jan van Leiden), a Dutch tailor who proclaimed himself "King of Sion" and established a radical theocratic regime in Münster. Hamerling portrays the city as a stage of religious fanaticism, where initial idealism turns into excesses and despair.
Italian royal provenance.

KÖNIG (THE) VON SION. Hambourg, Verlagsanstalt und Druckerei-Actiengesellschaft, 1879. - HAMERLING, Robert.
Tranches larges dorées à l’or fin.
Provenance royale italienne.
