KPM Manufacturing

Today I want to talk to you about another European manufacturing company, which has a truly regal history behind it: KPM. Purchased in 1763 by Frederick the Great and subsequently owned by 6 other kings and emperors, the KPM factory still produces today in its historic headquarters located in the heart of Berlin. KPM produces hard porcelain, composed of half kaolin, one quarter feldspar and one quarter quartz. The purer the materials, the higher the quality of the porcelain. Quartz combined with the other materials gives the porcelain its shape and strength. Feldspar hardens porcelain during firing and gives it its characteristic translucency. The ingredients are mixed with water and kneaded directly in the Berlin factory.
Inside the factory there is a studio that prepares the molds which will then be used to shape the porcelain. Starting from the artist's drawing, a freehand model is created of the same size as the final object and which is called a maquette. A 16% larger model is then produced to compensate for the shrinkage of the porcelain object during drying and firing. This model is also worked by hand and will then be used to build a mold, which is normally made up of several parts.
Every single piece is signed with the company logo which is a cobalt blue scepter which today represents the company's commitment to respecting the cultural values to which it is heir. Since 1803, painted porcelain has also had a second mark, an imperial globe, with a different color based on the type of decoration: red for floral designs and landscapes, green for non-floral decorations, blue for underglaze decorations and black to indicate printed decorations (generally customization with logos of large companies) . Furthermore, each painted piece is personally signed by the artist who worked on it.
KPM also collaborates with companies in other sectors. With Bugatti he created a Veyron Grand Sport “L'Or Blanc”, where the petrol cap, the wheel covers and numerous internal details of the car are in porcelain.
