KURT SCHMID-EHMEN (Torgau, Germany, 1901-Stamberg, Germany, 1968).
"Bust of Mrs Schmid-Ehmen, 1934.
Plaster.
Exhibitions: "European sculpture of the 20th century", European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM), Barcelona, 2014.
Size: 33 cm.
This bust is notable for its simplicity of form, reminiscent of Egyptian art and the realism of funerary masks.
Trained at the Leipzing and Munich Academy, among his first important works is the bust of the famous pianist Josep Pembauer, teacher of the concert pianist Hetty Haelssig, Schmid's future wife, whom he portrays here as Mrs Schmid-Ehmen. They met in the early 1920s and married in 1929, according to the catalogue of the exhibition held at the MEAM. Schmid-Ehmen's entry into the Nazi party took place in the 1930s, thanks to his friendship with the architect Paul Ludwing Troost, from whom he received his first commissions and who introduced him to Adolf Hitler. In fact, he was the creator of the imperial eagle, the emblem of the Nazi party. He was interested in sculpting tombs as well as the human face.
