[ translate ]

ca. 1800, 103 x 51 cm, North East Caucasus, Daghestan

A silk embroidery on a brown cotton foundation. A circular dark brown medallion placed at the centre of the field encloses a green device with four arms curled at the ends that appears to gyrate. The wide white surround of the medallion continues in the vertical direction, developing into a palmette with hooked outlines. The long curled hooks of the truncated devices in the corners protrude into the field’s interior like tentacles. Purchased by the collector at Galerie Eberhart Herrmann, Munich, in the 1980s.

SCARAMUZZA, CARLO (editor), Kaitag. Arte per la vita. Art for Life. Tessuti ricamati del Daghestan. Embroidered Textiles from Daghestan. Milan 2010, cat. 9

Condition
Damage to the foundation in places, especially along the sides. Partially corroded brown silk.
