A. The author, al-Kashifi, from Bayhaq near Marv, was brother-in-law of the poet Jami and friend of the poet Nava'i. He worked in Nishapur, Mashhad and Herat, compiled a commentary on the Qur'an and was also an astronomer. See B. A. Rosenfeld, E. Ihsanoglu, Mathematicians, Astronomers and Other Scholars of Islamic Civilisation and their Works (7th?19th C.), Istanbul 2003, p. 305, no. 898.

B. The author, Banu Musa, was in fact the three sons, Muhammad, Ahmad and al-Hasan, of Musa ibn Shakir, a robber in his youth from Khurasan who became an astrologer. The Abbasid Caliph al-Ma'mun (AD 813?833) took care of the three sons after the death of their father, and they excelled in mathematics, astronomy, geometry and mechanics. Their knowledge of Greek scientific literature was perfect and they led the astronomical observations in Baghdad and organized a school of translators who rendered many Greek scientific manuscripts into Arabic.
