Karachov Kazak
second half 19th century, 242 x 173 cm, South West Caucasus
The red field displays the four-and-one medallion design that is typical of these Karachov Kazaks, composed of a white, octagonal central motif and four white hooked boxes that each comprise nine stars. Six squares, small symbols as well as animals and one human are arranged around the central motif. In the wide blue main border, hooked diamonds alternate with smaller symbols. Red-ground Karachovs are more rarely encountered than green-ground examples.
BAUSBACK, PETER, Antike Orientteppiche. Brunswick 1978, ill. p. 199
Condition
The dark brown sections are corroded. Lower finish slightly reduced. Otherwise in good condition.
