Karapinar Fragment
ca. 1700, 145 x 113 cm, Central Anatolia, Konya
Some thirty Karapinar rugs of this rare group have survived, either in complete or in fragmented condition. They are coveted by collectors because of their expressive designs in rich dark colours. Most examples show a large diamond-shaped central medallion with pendants and quarter sections of diamonds in the corners. The ground of the main border is always dark brown or black and is often corroded, creating a relief effect in the border design.
Karapinar is situated circa 100 kilometres east of Konya in the heart of a dry region. Due to its remote location, the town remained untouched by commercial influences for a long time. This is why rugs made in Karapinar retained their old tribal designs until the early 18th century.
Condition
Obvious signs of age and wear. Holes and missing sections. Backed with fabric and mounted onto a wooden frame.
