Karapinar
Mid 19th century, 195 x 117 cm, Central Anatolia, Konya region
This red-ground village rug from the Karapinar region features a dark green, hexagonal central medallion with attached pendants enclosing a massive, white cruciform blossom. A brown box shape diagonally protrudes into the blue spandrels which are separated from the red field by stepped yellow lines. The composition, ornamentation and specific stylistic features indicate that this Karapinar group echoes the tradition of the far older so-called animal fur rugs. This distinctive type is frequently encountered in long formats where several medallions are aligned in a row. The elems contain the shield motifs characteristic of Konya rugs. – Completely preserved, including the original selvedges and red kilim finishes. Slight signs of wear in the pile, heavy corrosion in the brown sections.
