Kashan Mohtashem
Late 19th century, 199 x 133 cm, Central Persia
Large botehs placed in offset rows of changing directions form a spaciously conceived repeat in the cream field of this Kashan. Delicate floral stems and small trees inserted between the primary motifs create a second design layer. In the red main border, palmettes in the Herati style are linked by a green vine bearing sickle leaves and various flowers. The very fine weave, thick velvety pile, distinctive atmosphere and, in particular, the slightly angular style of drawing are typical features of the so-called Mohtashem group. Most of the Mohtashem Kashans show medallion designs whereas examples presenting large botehs are far rarer. – New overcasting along the sides, good condition.
