With her right hand she gently touches the baby's face. It seems as if she is checking whether the child is still alive. Her left hand clutches her head in a gesture of despair.

In retrospect, an interesting historical detail: Käthe Kollwitz was also a woman in the cradle in 1897. That was the year her son Peter was born. He died at the age of 18 in the First World War. It was the most devastating catastrophe in her own life.
