From the mid-1940s through the 1960s, she choreographed over 90 dances, maintained the only American black dance troupe, and headlined dozens of shows herself. Dunham was likely inspired by the Revue Nègre of 1920s Paris, and developed a fresher and more disciplined performance group out of this tradition.
