Katsukawa Shunshō (1726-1792) - Princess Sukeko - Original woodblock print (ukiyo-e) on traditional washi paper by the renowned Japanese master Katsukawa Shunshō (1726–1792) . This sheet belongs to his celebrated illustrated work of 1775 "Nishiki Hyakunin Isshu azuma-ori" (Brocade of the Orient of the One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets) and depicts with great elegance Princess Sukeko holding a fan.

The sheet measures 23. 8 cm high by 16. 8 cm wide (traditional Chūban format) .

The back of the sheet (visible in the attached images) clearly shows natural transfer and ink bleed, features that constitute the ultimate proof of a genuine manual impression with period woodblocks. The card-mount backing preserves old pencil annotations by a European collector written in Dutch ("18de eeuw", meaning eighteenth century, and the author’s name "Shunsho") .

Condition is good to reasonable for its great age (over 250 years) , showing a light patina and small natural oxidation stains on the paper that do not affect the beauty of the image. It is presented mounted on its protective mat, unframed. A magnificent Edo period collector’s piece. "
