Kazak Prayer Rug
late 19th century, 166 x 98 cm, South West Caucasus
In this blue-ground Kazak prayer rug, the red mihrab field surrounded by rosettes is very narrow and uncommonly tall. Its inner sides are decorated with green reciprocal trefoils all around. A re-entrant opening is seen at the lower end. The arch at the upper end is small and almost inconspicuous. Three rosettes and two diamonds mark the central axis, and two white ewers are placed at the bottom. We are unable to make out the two dates.
Condition
Slight signs of age and wear, some repairs in the red field. Both finishes slightly reduced.
